CME Information - Overview

This presentation provides an overview and update of anti-thrombus, deep venous thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis and treatment of DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE) in special populations. Specific discussion includes DVT and PE in general, updates in the OB/GYN population, prophylaxis for gynecological surgery, usage of Coumadin and low molecular weight heparin in the pregnant patient as well as radiation exposure. 

Educational Objectives
The intended result of this activity is increased knowledge. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to-

  • Discuss risk factors for DVT and PE.
  • Describe obstetric/gynecologic patients with regard to risks of developing DVT and PE.
  • Identify recommendations updated by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and ACCP in regards to gynecological surgery and laparoscopic surgery recommendations.
  • Explain the usage of heparin, low molecular weight heparin, and Coumadin in pregnant women.
  • Summarize controversies between the American College of Orthopedic Surgeons Guidelines for DVT versus the American College of Chest Physicians for usage of heparin, Coumadin, low molecular weight heparin, and alternative drugs for prophylaxis in the orthopedic patient.

Target Audience
The intended audience for this continuing medical education activity includes cardiologists, gynecologists and obstetricians, surgeons and other physicians who work with orthopedic and/or obstetric and gynecologic patients.

Method of Instruction / Participation
This online enduring material comprises slide sets with text and audio derived from a live cardiology grand rounds presentation with post activity assessment and evaluation.
