Ask a Texas Heart Institute Doctor
Informed patients make better patients.

Question:

Could my thyroid medicine be the cause of heart problems?

I have recently had my thyroid medicine reduced from 60 mg daily (for over 10 years) to 60 mg one day and then 30 mg the next day. I have done this for about 6 to 8 months.  A recent heart test shows a 50% ejection fraction of the left ventricle. Conclusion is anteroseptal reversibility. Could this be the cause of heart problem? Thank you.

No, the test results indicate need for either heart catheterization or CT [Computed Tomography] angiogram of the coronary arteries to exclude blockage, unrelated to thyroid.
